A school bus carrying children with special needs was struck by gunfire on Friday afternoon near East 163rd Street and Trinity Avenue in the Bronx. The bus was hit at least three times, damaging the back window and side of the vehicle. Authorities are investigating the incident, according to ABC7NY

A school bus attendant protected two children during a shooting. "The attendant says she was on the bus and two groups were shooting at each other, so she pushed two kids down on the floor and she got on top of the kids," a witness told ABC7NY. The bus driver then drove the vehicle to a safer location.

Following the shooting, the NYPD launched an investigation and reported that four suspects dressed in black—one with white stripes on black pants—fled south on Trinity Avenue. As of on Friday night, no arrests had been made. Law enforcement sources told the New York Post that the shooting may have been gang-related but found no evidence that the school bus was targeted. A nearby school was placed on a 30-minute lockdown as a precaution. A bus attendant covered the children, and the driver moved the bus away from the area.
