The Drakeford Library Complex at 203 S. Greensboro St. is set to finally have its grand opening on March 21 at 11 a.m., following an unforeseen delay caused by a winter storm. Representing a significant investment in community infrastructure, the $42 million venue is a multifaceted hub, incorporating the Orange County Southern Branch Library and other community services including the Carrboro Recreation, Parks and Cultural Resources Department and the Orange County Skills Development and NCWorks Career Center, among others.
Architectural firm Perkins & Will crafted the 52,000 square-foot, building, while Barnhill Contracting Company handled its construction, complete with three levels of multi-purpose spaces like workrooms, classrooms, and even a radio studio. An adjoining parking deck eases access with 171 parking spaces, demonstrating a commitment to accommodate the public's need for space and utility.
The celebration event promises ribbon cutting, speeches from significant figures such as Carrboro Mayor Barbara Foushee and Chair Jamezetta Bedford of the Orange County Board of County Commissioners, and special appearances by U.S. Congresswoman Valerie Foushee and Drakeford family members. Local favorites Neal's Deli and Open Eye Café will add to the festivities by offering refreshments. Notably, members of the Drakeford family will be in attendance, commemorating the legacy of the late Dr. Robert Drakeford.
Within its walls, the complex will extend beyond standard library offerings, fostering an environment conducive to both education and employment readiness.
