Got a Colorado state fishing license? If so, you can now make a reservation to cast your line at the Rueter-Hess Reservoir. The pristine body of water just off Hess Road in Parker is calling anglers of all skill levels to enjoy shoreline fishing, with reservation slots available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday through October, as noted by Douglas County.
Before you head to the reservoir, which lies less than 5 miles from I-25, remember that a valid fishing license is obligatory. This and other essential fishing requirements can be obtained through Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The Rueter-Hess waters are abundantly stocked with a variety of fish, including Walleye, Yellow Perch, and Largemouth Bass, to name a few. However, do note, no live or scented bait is allowed, and the use of only single barbless hooks is permitted.
There's no fee for fishing at Rueter-Hess, but you do need to secure a spot in advance. And if you're planning to drive, a $10 parking pass is necessary. It's also worth keeping an eye out for early spring improvements to the inspection area, which may briefly close the reservoir. Those looking to plan their day can make an online reservation via the Rueter-Hess webpage.
Aside from the fishing opportunities, the reservoir offers year-round trails and anticipates opening up for water sports like paddleboarding, kayaking, and windsurfing when the weather permits. Rueter-Hess is rooted in the community, not just as a source of recreation, but as a vital drinking water storage facility. The Recreation Advisory Board, composed of partner agencies from surrounding towns and counties, has forged the path toward incorporating leisurely activities from public demand and strategic planning. With an inception of storing water in 2012, Rueter-Hess has since blossomed into a landmark of recreation by 2023.
