Last Sunday, Peoria's Rio Vista Community Park hosted the 6th annual AZ Walk of Courage, where East Valley residents, including Chandler gas explosion survivor Dillon Ryan, gathered to support burn victims. Ryan, whose business was damaged in the 2021 explosion, participated in the walk to help those affected by burn injuries. He said, "To support burn survivors and their families and what they’ve been doing and what they’re currently going through," according to 12news.
The annual walk raised funds and awareness for burn survivors. Julie Piccione, founder of Changed by Fire, stated, "We pay for equine therapy, burn scar massage therapy, hypnotherapy, yoga therapy, we pay for compression garments." The organization partners with local organizations like Valleywise Health to assist burn survivors. The event included 5K, 10K, and one-mile runs, fostering a theme of "inclusion, love and healing," as reported by FOX10 Phoenix. Funds raised benefit organizations such as the Diane and Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health to support recovery efforts.
Ryan, now serving on the board of Changed by Fire after his recovery, is focused on supporting others in similar situations. He said, "During that journey, it can feel very isolating... I want burn survivors out there to know they're not alone," and added, "I’m a survivor, not a victim," as mentioned by 12news. The AZ Walk of Courage is a fundraiser and awareness campaign that brings together people affected by trauma to offer support. Changed by Fire and its partners provide resources to help burn survivors heal in all areas. More information on participation or contributions is available on their websites.
