Mark your calendars for Creek Week, a seven-day stint dedicated to promoting the health and appreciation of the 3,000 miles of creeks winding through Mecklenburg County. Organized by Mecklenburg Storm Water Services alongside several partners, the initiative kicks off next Saturday and runs through March 29, inviting residents to roll up their sleeves and lend a hand—or just learn a thing or two about local waterways. Details about the upcoming events and volunteer opportunities can be found at the City of Charlotte's official announcement.
From creek cleanups to eco-educational sessions, the week is chock-full of activities fit for all ages. Neighbors across the county can sign up to clear trash from nearby streams, partake in a lunchtime volunteer effort, or engage in an interactive story hour with Stormy the Storm Water Turtle. A variety of affairs are slated including a new greenway opening, fishing tutorials, tree identification workshops, and even a meditation session designed with mindfulness at the heart of nature. Kids, alongside their adults, are learning to fish at lessons specifically aimed for them to reel in the big one.
All these efforts culminate in The Big Spring Clean on the final Saturday, with hundreds expected to assemble at multiple Charlotte-Mecklenburg creeks from 9 a.m. to noon, according to the City of Charlotte's website. The aim is to replicate and surpass the previous year's efforts, which saw 137 volunteers removing almost 10 tons of litter from the county's streams and greenways—an environmental feat no small fry.
As the planners gear up for an even greater turnout, Mecklenburg Storm Water Services has high hopes for the week-long event. "This year, we hope to have over 200 volunteers helping our community," the event organizers revealed, setting the bar for what promises to be an impressive collective endeavor for Charlotte-Mecklenburg's natural spaces, as per the City of Charlotte.
