Charlotte Solid Waste Workers Hailed as Heroes for Saving Man's Life on Collection RouteSource: City of Charlotte

Two Charlotte Solid Waste Services workers, Brandon Martin and Kenneth Wiley, are being recognized for saving a man's life during their routine collection route. According to the City of Charlotte release, the workers were going about their normal duties when they spotted a man lying in his driveway.

Wiley stopped the truck, and Martin, who has a background in the Army and combat lifesaver training, checked the man’s condition. Martin found the man unresponsive with a blue face, and after adjusting his position to open his airway, the man began breathing again.

Charlotte Fire arrived shortly after and took over the scene, while Martin and Wiley continued their route. Later, Wiley returned to the man's house to check on him and left his contact information at the hospital. The man, a longtime lawyer, later called to thank them for their actions.

Charlotte Fire Captain Lucas Marks emailed Solid Waste Services to acknowledge Martin and Wiley’s life-saving efforts. Martin said in the same release, "We do a lot for the city that’s not even in our job description on a daily basis. We aren’t just garbagemen, we are good Samaritans."
