In a recent update on a devastating boating incident, authorities confirmed that ongoing efforts led to the recovery of a third victim, a child, from the St. Johns River. The search continued through the night and into the weekend, involving multiple agencies, including the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Florida Fish and Wildlife, Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department, and neighboring county sheriff's offices. The tragedy occurred when an 18-foot vessel was reported overturned near the Dames Point Bridge on Friday evening, and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office posted about the recovery on social media.
The first adult victim was found Sunday evening, while exhaustive search efforts for the remaining boaters continued. According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, teams are using "all available resources—including SONAR and Aviation Unit helicopters" to find the last missing child. The initial count of those rescued from atop the capsized boat stood at four, with one victim discovered deceased during early efforts. Despite the grim situation, the statement released underscored a commitment to "doing everything possible to find the remaining missing child and bring resolution to this tragedy."
Amidst the search operations, the community has been left reeling as the Sheriff's Office expressed their condolences to all those affected by the incident. An important note highlighted in their statement was the importance of boating safety, particularly the use of life jackets for children and an understanding of vessel limits by boaters—a precautionary message coated with the somber context of the current search.
Furthermore, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has taken the helm of the investigation to determine the causes behind the tragic event. Details on the factors contributing to the disaster remain under review, with the FWC slated to release findings in due course.
