To keep the public informed without the need for social media, the City of Boulder has introduced a new webpage that provides updates on ongoing public safety incidents. The city launched the resource to offer information in reverse chronological order, signalling a move to diversify how Boulder citizens can stay up-to-date during localized emergent events.
Boulder's Communications and Engagement Director, Sarah Huntley, highlighted the shifting landscape of social media engagement. "Social media is constantly changing, and the city recognizes that emerging societal factors are affecting our community's interest in and ability to use third-party platforms," said Huntley, as per City of Boulder. This approach aims to straightforwardly provide details to those seeking it, especially those preferring to avoid social media channels.
The public safety updates webpage is not designed to replace the city's social media communications or emergency alert systems. In more severe emergencies where immediate action might be necessary, Boulder continues to rely on traditional emergency alerts, which are disseminated via text and phone. The city advises residents to understand these systems and sign up to ensure they are reachable in case of a critical incident.
Additional improvements are on the horizon, with plans to roll out a city information mobile app later in the year. The app will allow Boulder to rapidly push public safety messages directly to residents' devices during specific incidents. "We’re optimistic these additions will increase the level of service and awareness to our community, and we are excited to roll them out," Huntley said, as obtained by the City of Boulder. The city's proactive steps seek to enhance public safety communication and responsiveness.
