Conceived by Aurora-based artist Shan Rodich, the winning design was chosen through a public voting process that attracted around 11,000 votes, with the flag scoring an average of 6.8 out of 10, "more than two points higher than any other finalist," as detailed by Brian Lachman, co-organizer of the CLE Flag Project, in a statement obtained by cleveland.com. With over 220 flags set to ripple proudly across Cleveland starting Friday, the hope is to deeply embed the new design into the local landscape, much like cities like Chicago and Milwaukee have successfully done with their distinct flags.
Breaking down the elements of the flag, the central "C" not only stands for the city's namesake but also honors the Cuyahoga River. The six-pointed star inside the "C" acknowledges the images on the original Cleveland flag, which highlighted the city's industry, manufacturing, and status as a critical port. In a statement procured by FOX8 News, designer Rodich expressed his intent to include nautical elements to reflect Lake Erie's significance and the city's and river's connections through the "C".
