In a move combining conservation efforts with public engagement, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo calls on animal lovers to play a role in naming the newest addition to their family, a female sloth bear cub born on December 22, 2024, WKYC reported. The zoo has offered up three names—Kamali ("Perfect Lotus"), Sahana ("Patience"), and Suhani ("Su" for "Pleasant")—each with its significance linked to the sloth bear's natural habitat, and supporters can cast their vote by donating to the SAFE Sloth Bear conservation program.
The naming contest is not just cute outreach; it's a fundraising mechanism to boost conservation of this vulnerable species. Voting closes sharp at midnight on March 25. According to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's announcement, the zoo emphasizes the moment's urgency for both the cub and the species. The cub's birth marks the second offspring for her 10-year-old mother, Shiva, and 19-year-old father, Balawat, with the youngster already showing significant developmental milestones, such as climbing onto her mother's back, a characteristic trait of this species.
Participation in the naming process is simple and directly benefits sloth bear conservation efforts. Cleveland19 detailed that each donation made through the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's website is dedicated to the SAFE program, which focuses on understanding sloth bear distribution and enhancing their protection in the wild. The zoo's Executive Director, Dr. Chris Kuhar, commented on the significance of the public's role, saying, "We are thrilled to welcome this new cub and proud to be part of the global effort to protect this species."
As a species, sloth bears are native to India and Sri Lanka. They face significant threats from habitat loss and human- wildlife conflict, consequently, a point the zoo officials are careful to stress, urging the community's support in the broader goal of securing a future for wildlife—statements obtained from multiple sources clarify that the ultimate aim is to rally the community around the species' precarious situation. Given that the cub tipped the scales at a mere 16 ounces at birth but has now grown to 8.2 pounds, she's expected to make her public debut at the zoo's Susie's Bear Hollow this spring, as fans keep a watch on the zoo's social media for the big reveal.
