This summer, Cleveland residents and visitors will have a new outdoor space to enjoy alongside Lake Erie. The North Coast Waterfront Development Corporation (NCWDC) has announced the forthcoming North Coast Yard, a pop-up lakefront park on a city-owned lot adjacent to the Steamship Mather and north of Huntington Bank Field. According to an initial report by WKYC, the temporary park is expected to open in May and will feature live music, cultural events, food and drink from local vendors, and recreational activities through September.

The North Coast Yard is part of the larger North Coast Master Plan aiming to revitalize Cleveland's waterfront, a vision that has already seen $150 million in fundraising efforts. Yet, as this initiative is set to take years to fully realize, the interim solution of the pop-up park will allow immediate access to the lakefront for season-long enjoyment. Executive Director Scott Skinner highlighted the need for prompt lakefront experiences for Clevelanders, stating, "Cleveland's residents should not have to wait to experience a lakefront that belongs to them," in a statement obtained by Cleveland19. Emphasizing the importance of early access, David Gilbert, chair of the NCWDC Board of Directors, echoed this sentiment, saying, "The more residents interact with the lakefront, the more they will believe in our city’s future as a waterfront city."

As covered by FOX8, the North Coast Yard will kick off its season with a grand opening on June 13th. The venue has a plan of activities, including Rollin’ at the Yard open skate nights on Fridays with DJs and free skate rentals and Second Saturdays featuring themed community gatherings. Community Build Days in May will invite locals to contribute hands-on to the park's development, promoting collective ownership and effort toward the space.

A full schedule of events is on tap for the pop-up park this summer, all aimed at bringing life to the downtown waterfront and offering a glimpse into what the future permanent development could present. Recreational opportunities will be abundant, including a basketball league and weekend Open Yard Play, which introduces games and creative activities for kids and families. According to WKYC, these events are part of creating a dynamic, equitable waterfront destination that captivates residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
