Bracing for a major winter storm forecasted to bring heavy snow and strong winds, Coconino County Public Works Department has taken preemptive measures by shutting down certain roads for public safety. In an announcement by Coconino County, they confirmed the closure of Stoneman Lake Road from I-17 to Lake Mary Road as of 6:00 p.m. yesterday, though local residents can still navigate cautiously to their properties from I-17. Similarly, Perkinsville Road has also been sealed off as of 4:00 a.m. this morning between White Horse Road near Williams and the Drake community, covering a distance of 22 miles.
These closures come in anticipation of treacherous driving conditions, aimed at safeguarding the community and allowing snow removal efforts to proceed unhindered. According to the official statement from the Coconino County, winds with gusts up to 45-55 mph are expected, and total snow accumulation could reach between 6 and 12 inches. With local bridges and overpasses likely becoming slick, steering clear of travel during the storm, especially during the Thursday evening commute, has been strongly urged.
Those seeking updates on road and weather conditions can connect with the Coconino County on their Facebook page or follow updates provided by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) on their Traffic Operations Center. Real-time weather information can also be obtained from the National Weather Service (NWS) for the Flagstaff area. For clearing snowy thoroughfares, the County's Public Works can be reached during business hours.
The county reminds residents adhering to the Winter Parking Ordinance 2022-06 prohibiting parking along county-maintained rights-of-way from November 1 to April 1. Anyone found in violation risks a minimum $200 fine or the towing of their vehicle. For residents making preparations at home, essential supplies including working carbon monoxide detectors, a three-day supply of non-perishable food and water, extra clothing, and essentials for maintaining warmth and communication are advised. In instances of snow-related emergencies, dialing 9-1-1 is the immediate course of action.
Vehicle preparedness is equally critical during such eventualities, with measures such as winterizing your car, packing an emergency kit, and maintaining at least half a tank of gas strongly recommended. Keeping someone informed about your travel plans and route can provide an extra layer of safety.
