A Columbus man, Christopher O. Smith, has been sentenced to nearly 60 years to life in prison for a double homicide and an assault incident that took place in July 2022. "Judge Chris M. Brown sentenced Christopher O. Smith to 59 years to life in prison for killing Amanda Perkins and Rodney Reavish, and assaulting his then-girlfriend Casey Johnson," according to the Franklin County Prosecutor's Office. The sentencing follows Smith's conviction for Murder with a 3-year firearm specification, Aggravated Murder with a 3-year firearm specification, and Felonious Assault.
Details of the tragic event reveal that on the night of July 14, Columbus Police were called to a scene at 595 Van Buren Drive, where they found Perkins and Reavish with fatal gunshot wounds. Earlier that evening, Smith had violently argued with and attacked Johnson, choking her until she lost consciousness. After Reavish and others, including Perkins, revived Johnson, she recounted Smith's attack, which led to an altercation and Smith's fleeing the scene. Smith later returned to brutally shoot Perkins and Reavish outside the Van Buren Shelter, all while Reavish was on a 911 call, which captured the incident.
Perkins and Reavish were pronounced dead at the scene. "When officers arrived, they found Amanda Perkins and Rodney Reavish with gunshot wounds," the report states through the Franklin County Prosecutor's Office. The events leading up to the shootings began with a confrontation after Johnson awoke from being choked by Smith. She conveyed to Reavish and the others that Smith had attacked her, provoking a response from Reavish.
The Columbus Police later apprehended Smith the following night, near Sullivant Avenue and S. Warren Avenue. The prosecutors on the case, Jeffrey Zezech and Ryan Pfefferle, brought forth the evidence leading to Smith's sentencing. The shocking sequence of events has ended with Smith set to spend the majority of his remaining life behind bars, providing some closure to a case that highlighted the deadly potential of domestic disputes.
