In Contra Costa County, District Attorney Diana Becton is the target of a recall effort that appears to be gaining traction. A group mobilizing the recall campaign has reportedly acquired the necessary signatures to initiate the process. According to a report by KRON4, the recall proponents served Becton with a notice on Monday and have collected over 100 signatures, more than the required threshold to move forward with the recall process.
The case of 24-year-old Alexis Gabe, whose dismembered body was discovered in November 2022, is among the chief concerns of the recall supporters. Gabe's family has expressed support for the recall, with her father, Gwyn Gabe, stating their confusion and indignation regarding the DA's office not filing charges against Alicia Coleman-Clark, the mother of the suspect in Gabe's murder, purportedly due to insufficient evidence. Gwyn Gabe expressed his frustration to KRON4, saying, "That’s what really infuriates me, you know. It’s over for us."
Supplemental to the efforts on the ground, a social media page titled Recall District Attorney Diana Becton has documented the recall movement's steps. In a recent post, it was announced that a Notice of Intent had been filed, as per the California Elections Code, to recall and remove Becton from her office and to have the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors appoint a successor. This information was relayed in a Facebook post, where the group detailed their reasons for the recall, citing increasing concern over unaddressed criminal activity, the frustration with Becton's perceived empty promises to victims and their families, and a general sentiment that her actions compromised community safety.
Furthermore, the Recall District Attorney Diana Becton's social media page posted a video showing the Notice of Intent delivered in person to Becton. It stated that out of 121 signatures collected, 103 were validated. The group claims this surpasses the initial requirement for the initiative to proceed. Following the delivery of the notice, Becton is expected to respond within seven days, as announced in another Facebook post by the recall group. They also announced a forthcoming press conference and provided contact details for further inquiries or questions.
