A water main break on San Jose Boulevard near Interstate 295 caused both a service disruption and traffic rerouting as local utility crews scrambled to manage the emergency. The disruption began last night when a third-party contractor damaged the water main, necessitating immediate action. According to First Coast News, the JEA crews closed the northbound I-295 off-ramp at San Jose Boulevard at 1:30 p.m. yesterday to make necessary repairs to the damaged infrastructure.
The initial response had the off-ramp at San Jose Boulevard closed for repairs, but it was opened again around 3:30 a.m. today. However, this opening would be brief. JEA informed the public that "the off-ramp will be closed again temporarily after 9 a.m. Thursday for crews to complete 'permanent asphalt restoration,'" a statement obtained by First Coast News said. The estimated duration for this secondary closure was around four hours.
Residents of the Mandarin area experienced a disruption in water service following the incident, as reported by Action News Jax. Traffic was affected as the emergency crews worked on both the water main and the necessary roadwork. The break became a clear illustration of how swiftly the mundane can be upturned and the taken-for-granted can be snatched away by the errant slice of a shovel or the misjudgment of a backhoe.
The necessity for a second closure is due to the thorough completion of road repairs. "There is some asphalt restoration that crews will address on Thursday morning, which will cause another temporary closure of the off-ramp after 9 a.m. to complete that work," detailed a statement from JEA reported by News4Jax. The utility company has expressed apologies for the inconvenience caused by the emergency repairs and thanked customers for their understanding.
