An eight-year sentence has been added to the already significant prison term for Christopher Berger, a convicted murderer who assaulted a fellow inmate using a homemade weapon. The sentencing, handed down by Judge Helena Gweon on February 28, is to run consecutive to Berger's existing sentence of 133 years and 4 months to life, as reported by the District Attorney's Office.
Details from the District Attorney's Office indicate that the jury, on February 5, convicted Berger of assault with a deadly weapon, also upholding the allegation of personal use of a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury, this stemming from the incident where the victim suffered severe wounds to his head, shoulder, and hands after being attacked by Berger with a shank. The added prison time reflects the gravity of the assault committed by Berger while incarcerated for a previous first-degree murder conviction.
According to the case details presented by Deputy District Attorney Frances Cobarrubio and featured in the official statement, the assault took a pronounced toll on the victim, marking another violent chapter in Berger's history within the criminal justice system. Prosecution in this case upon Berger's actions reiterates its commitment to addressing prison violence and upholding inmate safety.
