The Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) confirmed that Nevin Whetstone, an inmate serving a life sentence for capital murder, escaped from the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Sunflower County. Whetstone was also serving a one-year sentence for a previous escape from Sunflower County Jail. He was first sentenced on December 14, 1984, as reported by Action News 5.
Whetstone escaped this morning, wearing green and white pants. He is about 6 feet tall and weighs roughly 175 pounds. MDOC officials have warned the public to avoid approaching him and to contact local law enforcement or dial 911 if they spot him, as stated by FOX13 Memphis.
Whetstone was convicted for the 1983 death of 27-year-old Loretta Darlene Steele, who was found beaten behind a Tupelo motel. Items from her purse were also stolen. At the time of his arrest, Whetstone was 30 years old and charged with capital murder, rape, and robbery, according to Darkhorse Press.
