Travelers and residents in Crawford County should prepare for changes this spring as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) begins a major project on Route 6. Starting on Monday next week, an old bridge over French Creek will be replaced, with the project expected to cost around $6.75 million and last until November. The bridge is located between Route 198 (South Street) and Jordan Drive, crossing Woodcock and Hayfield townships.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the construction will replace the current bridge with a new concrete one, including milling, paving, guiderail installation, and new pavement markings. A detour using Route 6, Route 198, and Interstate 79 will be in place for about six months starting in mid-April. The existing metal truss bridge, built in 1933 and in poor condition, handles an average of 5,500 vehicles per day.

Mekis Construction of Fenelton, PA, was awarded the contract, with the total cost of $6,750,575.42 funded by the state. More information on the project is available on PennDOT's District 1 website.

Additionally, another bridge on Route 6 near Saegertown Borough is scheduled for a makeover, with a second contract expected by the end of the year and construction planned for 2027. PennDOT’s Northwest Region is preparing to tackle over 100 projects this year, with a list available in the 2025 Construction Book on their District 1 webpage.
