St. Louis residents and those in surrounding areas are advised to be especially cautious today as the National Weather Service (NWS) in St. Louis has issued a Red Flag Warning, indicating critical fire weather conditions due to strong winds and low humidity; this warning will remain in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening for parts of central/eastern Missouri and southwest Illinois, including in Fire Weather Zones such as Greene IL, Macoupin IL, and Randolph IL among others, the conditions are ripe for the possibility of uncontrolled wildfires reports NWS.
According to the detailed forecast, the St. Louis area can expect partly sunny skies today with a high near 67 and south wind speeds picking up in the afternoon to between 13 to 18 mph, and gusts that could reach as high as 33 mph, making for a precarious situation given the dry vegetation and low moisture content in the air, with the NWS predicting mostly cloudy conditions before it gradually clears up tonight, leading to a low around 40 and a switch to northwest winds after midnight.
Looking ahead to the weekend, sunny skies are predicted for tomorrow with a mild high near 64, followed by showers and possible thunderstorms late tomorrow night into Sunday, where the weather is expected to reach a high near 67 before clearing up again Sunday night, and the outlook suggests another sunny start to the week on Monday, with temperatures potentially hitting 61.
The hazardous weather outlook, shared by the NWS, extends beyond today's fire concerns cautioning that from tomorrow through to Thursday, there is the persistent chance of thunderstorms, as well as a slight chance of thunderstorms, by next Thursday which may influence temperatures and conditions further, it's important for locals and visitors alike to stay abreast of these developments and to reckon with the imminent forces of nature that can render us so small and be so powerful.
