In a move that continues to underscore the federal government's relentless clamp down on illegal re-entry, U.S. authorities have arrested Moises Vasconselos-Garcia, a 26-year-old Mexican national, on charges related to his return to the United States after a previous deportation. Acting U.S. Attorney Sara C. Sweeney announced that Vasconselos was taken into custody in Dade City and could face a two-year sentence in federal prison if convicted.
According to court documents, Vasconselos was removed from the country on May 30, 2022. They had not sought legal permission to re-enter the United States until his latest apprehension on February 25. As detailed in a statement obtained by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida, the case is part of a larger initiative to tackle unlawful immigration sternly.
The investigation that led to Vasconselos's capture was a collaborative effort between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Enforcement Removal Operations (ERO), and the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk Watson is handling the case's prosecution.
