A DeSoto County Sheriff's deputy was hospitalized after being intentionally struck by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 269. According to Action News 5, the unidentified deputy has been labeled a hero for intercepting the vehicle that was reportedly traveling at a dangerously high speed in the wrong direction. Sheriff Thomas Tuggle commended the deputy's bravery, stating, "It takes courage to do what this deputy did tonight. He is a hero."
Details from the incident reveal that after multiple reports were made concerning a vehicle barreling west along I-269 East, narrowly missing several cars, the deputy strategically positioned his car in the path of the wrong-way driver east of Craft Road and was deliberately hit. Responding to the emergency, a procession of law enforcement vehicles was spotted by Action News 5 cameras escorting an ambulance to Regional One Hospital around 8:40 p.m.; the deputy was reported in stable condition upon arrival.
The wrong-way driver avoided injuring others in the incident and has been taken into custody. In a statement obtained by DeSoto County News, Sheriff Tuggle expressed the weight of the deputy's split-second decision: "Recognizing the imminent danger, he made the difficult decision to pull into the path of the oncoming vehicle to prevent a collision with other cars." The deputy's identity remains unpublished while the investigation is ongoing, conducted by Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Following the crash, the sheriff's department advised motorists to avoid the area shortly after the incident, which occurred around 8 p.m. The area was declared clear about two and a half hours later, as per the details shared by DeSoto County News. Local Memphis reported that the sheriff's office plans to release more information as it becomes available for the community, which is understandably shaken by the events that could have taken a much darker turn but for the deputy's decisive action.
