The Detroit Fire Department will host a Safety Series webinar on March 12 to educate residents on fire safety. The session will cover preventative measures related to everyday activities, including cooking, smoking, and candle use, according to the City of Detroit.
The Detroit Fire Department reports that home cooking is the leading cause of home fires and fire-related injuries, accounting for nearly 22% of Detroit's structural fires last year. Many of these fires resulted from individuals attempting to extinguish flames themselves, leading to severe injuries. Captain Theresa Halsell stated, "Fire safety starts with awareness and prevention," and advised precautions such as staying in the kitchen while cooking and keeping flammable items away from open flames, emphasizing that "Simple actions, like staying in the kitchen while cooking and keeping flammable items away from open flames, can save lives." During a webinar, the Detroit Fire Department will provide fire safety tips, including using timers while cooking, properly extinguishing cigarettes, and keeping candles away from flammable objects. Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms said, "Our team is working to empower our residents to stay safe by making sure they have access to the best tips and tricks to prevent fires at home and know what to do if one does occur," as reported by the City of Detroit.
The Detroit Fire Department advises residents to prioritize escaping a house fire and follow the guidance: "WHEN IN DOUBT… GET OUT!" Officials recommend immediate evacuation and calling 911 in case of a fire. Residents can join a safety webinar to learn about fire prevention and emergency preparedness.
