Five high school students from Mountain Vista High School were recently recognized for their heroic efforts in the aftermath of a serious car accident in Douglas County. Amadou Bah, Ibrahima Bah, Abdulai Bah, Kasper Skonieczny, and Ousmane Balde stepped up to the plate when faced with an emergency, earning them the Sheriff’s Commendation Award for their actions. The commendation was given by Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly, acknowledging the students' bravery and swift response.
The scene unfolded on January 27, when, during rush hour traffic, a vehicle lost control and rolled over at the intersection of Wildcat Reserve Parkway and Poston Parkway. With no time to lose, the five teenagers, on their way to school, did not hesitate to quickly approach the wreck before any emergency responders or adult drivers intervened. They worked as a team to help extricate the driver and passenger from the vehicle, an act captured on a cell phone video that showcased their willingness to put themselves at risk for the safety of others.
As obtained by Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Weekly praised the students, "Amadou, Ibrahima, Abdulai, Ousmane, and Kasper exemplify what it means to be ‘Good People,’ a core value at Mountain Vista High School." He further commended their quick actions, "even at the risk of their own safety," describing it as nothing short of heroic.
The Sheriff’s Commendation Award is reserved for individuals who go above and beyond in their service to the community. This honor, bestowed upon the five courageous students, recognizes their exceptional quick thinking and their readiness to assist in a critical moment. Their school and the sheriff's office both hold these young individuals in high esteem, positioning their selfless act as an example for other community members to follow.
