A high-speed chase from Orange County to Los Angeles late Monday night culminated in a dramatic exit for a suspect whose car burst into flames on the 5 Freeway in Elysian Park. NBC Los Angeles reports that the chase was initiated following a traffic violation in Seal Beach. The pursuit intensified, leading to a scene where the suspect's damaged Honda sedan emitted a shower of sparks that erupted into flames.
During portions of the chase captured on camera by SkyFOX, the vehicle in question was visible with sparks spewing from the back while speeding along the freeways, including the 710. The fiery ordeal reached its peak as large flames appeared to nearly cause the car to explode, according to FOX LA. Ultimately, the suspect was apprehended by authorities on the side of the 5 Freeway after first attempting to carjack another motorist and then, returning to his blazing vehicle.
Adding to the chaotic events, as reported by ABC7, after the suspect's car came to belching flames, he exited and dashed across the freeway lanes. Initially approaching another vehicle, the attempt for carjacking was aborted, driving the suspect back to his own car. A circling air unit illuminated the suspect as he raised his arms and subsequently complied with the incoming officers' instructions to lay on the pavement for arrest.
One anomalous detail was the suspect, while being led away by Seal Beach police and California Highway Patrol officers, became unexpectedly combative, which was conveyed by CBS Los Angeles. Having been handcuffed, the man started to kick at the officers. The altercation was short-lived, however, as the officers managed to subdue him, ending the night's volatile pursuit.
