A tragic event unfolded in Cambridge last Friday, and authorities are delving deep to unravel the circumstances that led to a deadly incident on Massachusetts Avenue and Vassar Street. According to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, the mishap occurred at approximately 1:21 A.M., initiating a serious investigation spearheaded by Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Cambridge Police Commissioner Christine Elow.
The crash involved an SUV, a moped, and an MIT Police cruiser—with the SUV being driven by Lauren Mullins, 32, of Roselle Park, NJ, travelling to quickly eastbound when it collided with the moped and police vehicle in front of her. The moped's operator, 73-year-old Daniel O’Neil from Boston, was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries. Post-accident, Mullins was apprehended at the scene and charged with Operating Under the Influence – Liquor with Serious Bodily Injury and Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle.
Details from the arraignment of Mullins unveil a $15,000 bail, where she has been mandated not to consume any alcohol or drugs, avoid driving, stay within the confines of Massachusetts, and comply with random substance screenings, as detailed by the Middlesex District Attorney's Office. "During the defendant’s bail hearing, her bail was also revoked on a pending case out of the Boston Municipal Court", unresting the layers of her legal troubles.
What's more, the aftermath of the deadly collision has prompted the authorities to expedite a bail hearing following O'Neil's death, with proceedings scheduled for today. This ongoing probe is a collaborative effort between the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the Cambridge Police Department, and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, all working together to closely dissect every angle of the crash.
