Early Tuesday morning, Durham County Sheriff's Office deputies were involved in a high-speed chase that ended near Falls Lake. According to a statement from the DCSO, the chase started when a deputy noticed a vehicle driving carelessly and recklessly around 2:00 a.m. The deputy attempted to pull over the vehicle on Geer St and US 70, but the driver wouldn't stop and continued to accelerate, eventually leading deputies onto a dirt road close to Falls Lake.
With the chase terminating at the lakeside, the deputies set out on foot to search for the errant driver, which lead them to the abandoned vehicle in the water. After firefighters and EMS arrived, they confirmed the vehicle was unoccupied. Indications at the scene suggest the driver made it out of the vehicle and onto dry land prior to the arrival of the authorities.
As of now, the Sheriff's Office Search and Recovery team has taken over the effort to remove the vehicle from Falls Lake and conduct a thorough search for the driver.
