In the early hours of Wednesday, a fatal collision disrupted the peacefulness of Highway 138W in Douglas County, Oregon. Oregon State Police were called to the scene of a head-on crash involving a Ford Escape and a Kenworth Commercial Motor Vehicle at approximately 4:58 a.m., near milepost 6. The devastating impact caused the Ford to erupt in flames, a sight that would unsettle the quiet rhythm of the morning commute.
According to the initial investigation, Carl Gregory Miller, a 38-year-old Eagle Point resident, was at the helm of the eastbound Ford when it tragically swerved into the opposing lane, resulting in a collision of unforgiving metal and fire with the Kenworth truck. Witnesses pulled an unresponsive Miller from his flaming vehicle. Despite their efforts, Miller was pronounced dead at the scene.
Grant Crossgrove, 34, hailing from Sisters, Oregon, and the operator of the Kenworth, emerged from the wreckage without injury, a stark contrast to the fatal fate of the Ford driver. The aftermath of the collision saw Highway 138W closed for an estimated five hours, as multiple agencies, including Kellogg Rural Fire and Bay City Ambulance, worked in concert to manage the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under scrutiny; however, fatigue has been suggested by officials as a contributing factor.
