
In Ypsilanti, Michigan, Eastern Michigan University is hosting a series of events to celebrate Women's History Month, featuring a diverse range of activities. According to CBS News Detroit, the events are designed to highlight the achievements and contributions of women in various fields.
According to the Ann Arbor Times, the Women of Color symposium on March 11 will continue the month's focus by addressing wellness, resilience, and activism. The commemoration will also include the EmpowHER conference and gala on March 19, followed by the Women of Excellence award ceremony on March 26, which will feature Tiffany Mensah from the D.O.V.E.S. Network as the keynote speaker.
Meanwhile, the Women's and Gender Studies Department at EMU is marking its 50th anniversary. Tomorrow, U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens is scheduled to deliver a keynote address, reflecting on the progress of women's and gender studies throughout its history. The department, which introduced Michigan's first women's studies minor in 1975, has become an interdisciplinary hub, attracting prominent figures such as Maya Angelou and Audre Lorde. In an interview, Mary-Elizabeth Murphy, the department's head, discussed its growth and the diverse student body it serves. "The curriculum invites students to the cutting edge of interdisciplinary conversations that are the future of academia," Murphy told Eastern Michigan University.
As part of the month's activities with a career-focused emphasis, the WGST department has scheduled an event on March 18 titled "Careers in Women's & Gender Studies." This event will provide aspiring scholars an opportunity to network with successful EMU graduates, including Nada Al-Hanooti, Laura Hoehner, and Nicole Carter. The series of events is designed to be inclusive, open to the public, and aimed at empowering both the EMU community and the wider public, according to Eastern Michigan University.
