El Paso's own Congresswoman Veronica Escobar is making a push to involve the youth in the political process by announcing a string of summer opportunities. According to Congresswoman Escobar, local high school and college students have the chance to apply for internships and join the Congressional Youth Advisory Council (CYAC). "I’m thrilled to offer these opportunities to young El Pasoans," Escobar said. The internships, offered both in her El Paso and Washington, DC offices, are designed to give students a first-hand look at the inner workings of the federal government.
The internships aren't just about observing, though they are a chance to actively participate. Successful applicants will get a chance to directly be involved in attending congressional committee hearings and legislative meetings, crafting issue briefs, and conducting substantial research. These placements, accommodating part-time and full-time commitments, aim to align the projects and responsibilities with the interests and educational goals of the interns. This is an effort, as noted by Congresswoman Escobar, "to learn more about how our federal government works, build their resumes, and most importantly, give back to our community."
For those students fascinated by policy and public service, the CYAC presents an engaged learning experience. Set up by Congresswoman Escobar to inspire leadership, the initiative offers high school students a chance to actively debate policy and delve deeper into the legislative process. It's a collaborative setup where students work alongside their peers to research policy topics and contribute to the work of Escobar's office.
