An El Paso resident, Jose Eduardo Larin, 36, has been given a federal prison sentence of nearly 22 years for his conviction on charges of producing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The sentencing comes after an investigation by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and Homeland Security Investigations, which revealed a video uploaded to a Dropbox account, ultimately traced back to Larin.

Details of the case, put forth by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Texas, stated that Larin's Dropbox contained multiple CSAM images and videos, in addition to personal documents that matched his name and picture. Further incriminating evidence was found when a forensic review of the Larin's cellphone unearthed 3,207 files of CSAM, which included materials produced by Larin himself. These materials depicted sexually explicit conduct involving a five-year-old child.

Larin, who was apprehended on August 13, 2024, entered a guilty plea on November 21, 2024. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at the escalating problem of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Acting U.S. Attorney Margaret Leachman for the Western District of Texas announced the sentencing. While Assistant U.S. Attorney Micaela Glass was responsible for prosecuting Larin's case, Homeland Security Investigations carried out the detailed investigatory work. Project Safe Childhood, under which this case was prosecuted, strives to combine federal, state, and local efforts to improve the detection and prosecution of internet-based exploitation of children, and to help rescue victims.
