A tragic incident unfolded yesterday morning as an elderly woman lost her life after her vehicle wandered into oncoming traffic along San Jose Boulevard, resulting in a collision, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has confirmed.
Reports from First Coast News indicate that the southbound Toyota the woman was driving sideswiped another vehicle after it drifted into the northbound lanes near Baymeadows Road, the car slowed but continued to travel in the wrong direction and eventually ran into a Subaru waiting at a stoplight. The victim, whom authorities have not named, was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead, marking the year's 43rd traffic death in Duval County according to information obtained by News4Jax.
The event has raised concerns regarding the safety of elderly drivers, particularly in light of no clear cause for the woman's fatal traffic drift, although a spokesperson for JSO speculated that she "probably had a medical episode," as told to First Coast News.
The accident prompted detours and delays in the area, with traffic impact expected until the afternoon of the same day, and while the other involved parties reported minor injuries, the community is left grappling with the loss of life and safety questions such crashes inevitably raise as per a report by Action News Jax.
