An incident at Katherine L. Albiani Middle School in the Elk Grove Unified School District is currently under scrutiny after a teacher distributed classroom materials that contained racial slurs and offensive imagery. As reported by KCRA, the assignment featured a derogatory term and a cartoon depicting a racist dollar bill, both using the slur.
During a school board meeting this past Tuesday, community members expressed their indignation, disappointment and call for change. School employee Kathy Wilson was notably vocal, surpassing the two-minute mark during public comments to declare the materials as "without a doubt racist to its core," according to KCRA. Wilson, who reported the incident and spoke tearfully about the need for proactive solutions and ongoing accountability, received supportive embraces from those gathered.
The teacher responsible for the handout has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation by the district. In a statement acquired by CBS13, EGUSD stated the distributed materials do not represent the district's values and asserted that support will be extended to all affected students, staff and families.
Lorreen Pryor, from the Black Youth Leadership Project, described the incident as incredulous and devoid of educational merit on their student-run podcast "Black vs. the Board of Education." "My first reaction is this can't be real life. We're really handing out this lesson to teach the use of the n-word? It makes no sense," Pryor told CBS13. Furthermore, concerns were raised at the school board meeting by over a dozen speakers, yet the incident was not formally on the agenda.
