In a concerted effort to ease the transition from high school to higher education for El Paso students, El Paso Community College (EPCC) is hitting the road with the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) for 'Operation College Bound'. The initiative, lasting until May 3, consists of 22 stops at local high schools, aiming to simplify registration and showcase academic opportunities. The traveling enrollment road show is equipped with staff from departments including Admissions, Financial Aid, and Counseling, ready to assist prospective students in securing their academic future.
According to EPCC News, Michael Talamantes, Director of Recruitment Services at EPCC, stated, “Operation College Bound provides students that community access," he emphasized the efforts in removing barriers for students who may feel discouraged by the enrollment process, hence the decision for EPCC and UTEP to bring their resources directly to high schools, simplifying the process and efforts. Students are not only offered information but also receive EPCC-branded merchandise such as sling bags, shirts, and pens to promote a sense of belonging and investment in their educational pursuits.
A specific highlight for the students is Valeria Valle, a senior from El Paso Leadership Academy, who, according to EPCC News, is looking forward to joining EPCC's Fashion Tech department, expressing her passion for fashion and interest in the academic programs at EPCC she said, “I love fashion and I am really interested in attending EPCC and the opportunities they have there," highlighting the program's draw for students with specialized interests.
All school districts within the County of El Paso are included in the schedule, ensuring comprehensive access, the program culminates on May 3, with Tejano Day at EPCC's Transmountain Campus, an event open to students and parents who might've missed the school visits, including those from private or parochial schools, where they can sign up on spot for classes after enjoying food, music, and campus tours. Notably, a special Operation College Bound session is set for April 28 at Eastwood High School, featuring appearances by the Presidents of both EPCC, Dr. William Serrata, and UTEP, Dr. Heather Wilson, who will share insights and offer direct engagement with the future scholars of their institutions.
