Emergency crews in Monroe County have made significant progress in controlling a series of brush fires that erupted Tuesday, leading the Mayor Mitch Ingram to lift evacuation orders. According to WVLT, Mayor Ingram praised the local fire departments for their exhaustive efforts and encouraged monetary donations to support them. "Your generosity will help replenish supplies and support the firefighters who worked tirelessly to protect our communities," Ingram stated.
The wildfires, which burned approximately 267 acres in southern Monroe County, were exacerbated by high winds that toppled trees onto power lines. However, Monroe County officials announced that the fires are "fully controlled but not fully contained," with patrols in place to monitor potential hot spots. Mayor Ingram, highlighting the gravity of the situation, told WBIR, "Controlled is you’ve actually stopped the spread, but it still has that potential based on wind." Despite these challenges, relief efforts are bolstered by wet weather that has significantly helped reduce fire activity.
Local resident Ricky Shaw, who has witnessed various natural calamities in his lifetime, expressed to WBIR, "That’s the first time I’ve ever seen a fire here like this," adding that the wind gusts made rest difficult, with sounds impacting his house like a "train hitting it." Shaw's testimony underscores the unusual and severe nature of this event for the Tellico Plains community.
Amidst the emergency response, over 40 agencies, including some driving back to Alabama, Georgia, and Gatlinburg, offered assistance in battling the wildfires. Tellico Plains Mayor Marilyn Parker noted the collaboration, telling WATE, "We had probably right at 45 different departments that came in to help battle these fires." Reinforcing the spirit of community support, Jeff Bowman with the American Red Cross, pointed out the outpouring of generosity and aid as neighbors assisted one another. "It’s good happy that we can help our local people," Bowman shared with WATE, highlighting that, regardless of origin, they're united in helping neighbors in times of need.
