An incident yesterday evening has resulted in significant disruptions to L train service, with emergency responses underway following an individual being struck by a train at the 14th Street-Union Square station. As reported by ABC7 New York, the event occurred shortly before 8 p.m., causing severe delays and service changes across the line.
The situation had a ripple effect throughout the system. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) confirmed that in response, trains were operating between Bedford Avenue and Eighth Avenue with limitations, where most Eighth Avenue-bound L trains were terminating at Bedford or Myrtle avenues. The PIX11 News confirmed that the person struck was a fatality.
For Manhattan commuters, the MTA advised several alternate routes: connecting to A/C trains at 8 Av/14 St, and J trains at Broadway Junction, or taking the M14A-SBS or M14D-SBS buses that make stops nearby. In Brooklyn, the G train at Lorimer St provided an alternative path to connect with the 7/A or C train. Delays continued well into the evening, as L trains crawled back to a regular schedule, prompting the passengers to seek these alternative modes of transportation.
The impact on Brooklyn was similarly felt, with the MTA recommending transfers between L and A/C trains at Broadway Junction, and L and M trains at Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs. B60 buses also ran nearby, as a surface option for displaced subway riders. The FDNY was on the scene at Union Square following the incident, and service on the L line, remained affected as the investigation proceeded and MTA crews worked to restore normal operations.
