This morning, firefighters in northeast Columbus were called to the scene of a significant two-alarm fire that had taken hold of an abandoned apartment building. ABC6 reported that the blaze began around 5 a.m. on Fitzroy Place near Cleveland Avenue. Witnesses described seeing large flames engulfing the structure, though the cause of the fire remains uncertain at this time.
The empty edifice in the 2300 block of Fitzroy Place North, close to Morse Road, was confirmed to have been vacant as firefighters arrived to tackle the roaring flames. The report by WBNS includes details from a battalion chief with the Columbus Division of Fire, who stressed that no occupants were inside the building as the fire ensued.
No injuries have been reported yet in connection with the fire. Questions regarding the building's history, particularly its utility status, were raised as firefighters worked to contain the flames. NBC4i points out that Columbus Division of Fire Chief Jeffrey Geitter does not believe the building had electrical service, which could potentially rule out one cause of the fire. However, an official statement on the inception of the flame has yet to be issued.
