A 45-year-old man from The Plains has died after the motorcycle he was riding ran off South Plains Road in Athens County and slammed into a curb and a roadway sign. Thomas W. Burson was riding a 2005 Harley-Davidson southbound on the road Sunday afternoon when the crash occurred, according to a report from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The Athens Communication Center received the first call about the crash at 1:36 p.m. on September 13, 2026, according to an OSHP report relayed by the Scioto Valley Guardian, prompting a response from Athens County EMS and The Plains Volunteer Fire Department. Burson had driven off the right side of South Plains Road before striking the curb and then the sign, per a report cited by WSYX.
Burson was first transported to Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster before being transferred to Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe, where he died from his injuries. That transfer took place just weeks after Adena Health formally acquired Fairfield Medical Center on September 1, 2026, a deal detailed in a post shared on Facebook that merged two health systems serving southeastern and south-central Ohio.
A Crash Close to Home
Burson lived in The Plains, an unincorporated Athens County community, according to an OSHP report cited by 10TV. The crash occurred on South Plains Road, while Burson lived in The Plains — one that the Athens County Sheriff's Office regularly patrols and responds to service calls on, per records published by The Parkersburg News and Sentinel. Ohio's Helmet Law and Statewide Crash Trends
Ohio maintains a partial motorcycle helmet law under Ohio Revised Code Section 4511.53, which requires protective headgear only for riders under 18, novice license holders in their first year, and permit holders, according to the Gervelis Law Firm.
