Former Houston police officer Galib Waheed Chowdhury has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after entering a guilty plea for the aggravated assault of his wife, Sadaf Iqbal, who he shot in the face in their west Houston apartment back in June 2023 now, nearly two years later, justice is being served, or at least according to some. Chowdhury was initially taken off duty immediately after the incident, which he claimed was an accident during a supposed break-in, as per information obtained by FOX 26 Houston.
On the night of the shooting, it was Chowdhury himself who called 911 reporting the incident as a home invasion gone wrong, asserting that his wife's injuries were collateral damage in his defense of their home, this according to the statement he gave which detectives found lacking in credibility; no signs of a forced entry were discovered at the scene. After being taken to the hospital, Iqbal underwent surgery for injuries including damage to her right eyeball and multiple fractures to her right hand and cheekbone, KHOU reported.
Iqbal's family, still seeking aid for her ongoing recovery, expressed on a GoFundMe page that while they believed Chowdhury deserved stricter punishment, they are grateful that the wheels of justice have spun in their favor. "Most of all, continue to show her love and support—because she’s not done fighting, and she’s not alone," the GoFundMe appeal implores the public, as reported by KHOU.
Surveillance footage showed Chowdhury arriving home approximately 40 minutes before his wife on the night in question, suggesting a premeditation to his actions Iqbal's sister suggested to KHOU that what transpired was an "execution attempt," an allegation placed against a man once sworn to protect and serve, now bound by the verdict of the court to serve time for the violence he wrought upon one of his own.
