Galib Waheed Chowdhury, a former Houston Police Department officer, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 2023 shooting of his wife, reports Click2Houston. Chowdhury was found guilty of first degree felony charges after the incident, which took place in their northwest Houston apartment on Clay Road.

Initial claims by Chowdhury suggested an accidental shooting during an attempted defense against an intruder, a story that quickly unraveled upon further investigation. There was no evidence of a break-in at the residence and disturbing text messages sent by Chowdhury to his wife prior to the shooting hinted at a more sinister narrative. The texts included insults, such as "Wow, sh*t wife," and "Pick up, b****," as noted in the report by Click2Houston.

In a statement obtained by KHOU, Sadaf Iqbal's family expressed that although they believed a more severe punishment was warranted, they were appreciative that justice was served. Iqbal continues to recover from grievous injuries, including a fractured cheekbone and multiple fractures in her right hand and fingers. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with her medical bills, urging the community to "continue to show her love and support—because she’s not done fighting, and she’s not alone."

The case has drawn attention to the often-shadowed issue of domestic violence within law enforcement families. Former HPD Chief Troy Finner addressed the incident back in 2023, stating, "Domestic violence is very serious in our community and also around the nation, and we stand here at HPD to do everything that we can to prevent that," according to Click2Houston. Iqbal’s sister revealed that she considered the shooting an attempt at execution, further intensifying the gravity of Chowdhury's crime.
