The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is bringing black bear hunting discussions to the virtual realm, inviting the public to weigh in on the potential regulation of this contentious practice. Residents can offer their perspectives via Zoom meetings in early April, which will be pivotal in shaping the Commission's decision-making in May.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission hosts these sessions to continue its consultation process, having previously gathered stakeholder insights in March. Out of these conversations, proposals have taken shape, which the Commission will carefully consider. The public, only needing to attend one, as the content in all meetings is identical, can choose from three upcoming opportunities: April 2 from 12-3 p.m., April 3 from 5-8 p.m., or April 5 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., all Eastern Daylight Time.

December's Commission meeting marked a significant step when the FWC's Bear Management Program presented a 5-year progress report on executing the 2019 Florida Black Bear Management Plan. After reviewing advances in management and research, the Commissioners asked for a return with detailed hunt options. The proposed regulations aim to ensure sustainable interaction between human populations and the bear habitat, hinder the species' decline, and preserve Florida's diverse ecosystem.

All details regarding the virtual meetings, including participation links, are available to the diligent seeker at MyFWC.com/Hunting under the "Florida black bear" section.
