The City has declared that Spring Free Excess Household Trash Week will take place from March 17-21, allowing residents to dispose of surplus household trash without charge. During this specified period, the standard charge for disposal will be waived, making it easier for individuals to clear out non-hazardous items that clutter their homes.
City residents should prepare for the event by placing eligible items at the curb on their regularly scheduled garbage collection day. These items include "Furniture, mattresses, bedsprings, paint (dried out), extra bags and boxes of garbage," according to the City of Gastonia's announcement. Meanwhile, yard waste or leaf collection will not be available during this week.
There are, however, certain materials that are not covered by this free service. The City of Gastonia's statement specifies that "Building materials, dirt, rocks, bricks, hazardous liquids, batteries, and automotive parts" will not be picked up at the curb. Residents with these types of items are directed to dispose of them at the Gaston County Landfill or during special waste collection events.
In their notice, the City urges residents to consider green alternatives before opting for disposal. Donating lightly used items, or recycling wherever possible, is recommended. Residents looking to recycle should review the list of recycling drop off centers provided by the City. Informations regarding sustainable disposal and recycling is accessible on the City of Gastonia's website.
For those items that do require disposal, citizens are asked to bag or box small loose objects, aiding the city's crews in safe and effective collection. Should residents have items that fall under the fee-based disposal category, including tires, electronics, and appliances, they're encouraged to contact the City of Gastonia Solid Waste Division at 704-866-6714 for more information and a complete list of fees.
