The Germantown Police Department is grappling with a new kind of training — and it's not your typical self-defense course. They've launched Shelby County's first law enforcement Jiu-Jitsu Club, as reported by Germantown's official website. This initiative is not just about physical prowess; it's about the mental game too — providing officers the opportunity to build their strength, flexibility, and cardio while simultaneously fine-tuning their mental resilience, focus, and stress management.
Known for its strategy of technique over strength, Jiu-Jitsu is favored in this law enforcement setting for how it trains officers to "gain compliance safely and effectively without excessive force." The current club, which sees officers training together once a month and practicing individually as well, boasts eight members, with more showing interest. Their efforts are already paying off: Officer Rickey Nguyen secured third-place at an IBJJF tournament in Atlanta, and Tyler Rose bagged three gold medals and one silver in Memphis, according to the Germantown news release.
But there's a strategy to this—a bet on the synergy between Jiu-Jitsu and effective policing. In a more broad recruitment effort, the GPD has actively been seeking officers with a knack for the art over the past two years. This approach appears to be rewarding; the top performers in the most recent class of Memphis Police Training Academy were Jiu-Jitsu practitioners from GPD, a fact that underscores the program’s intertwined goals of wellness and professional development.
As the program continues to grow, the Jiu-Jitsu Club is much expected to be a boon for the GPD in many arenas — from officer training, safety, to recruitment. Investing in this discipline represents not just an upgrade in how officers to better protect and serve but also signals a step toward a more holistic approach to law enforcement training. The holistic approach to wellbeing is just as much a priority as tactical readiness for GPD officers, ultimately aiming to raise the bar for police training in the region.
