As South Texas grapples with the aftermath of the Welder Fire, Governor Greg Abbott has called for support from the federal level. To aid the affected communities, he requested a disaster declaration from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), according to a recent announcement obtained by the Office of the Texas Governor. This measure aims to secure low-interest disaster loans for residents and business owners in San Patricio County and the surrounding counties to rebuild what the flames torched.
In the wake of this destructive fire, an analysis undertaken by state, local, and federal officials concluded that San Patricio County meets the requirements for SBA assistance. Impacted Texans provided information on damages through self-reporting via the Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool (iSTAT) surveys. In a display that Governor Abbott's request echoes recovery efforts, he stated, "The resiliency of South Texans is on full display as recovery efforts continue in the aftermath of the Welder Fire." He also emphasized the critical nature of these loans, "Such resiliency must be matched by the resources provided to help our fellow Texans," a statement obtained by the Office of the Texas Governor.
Governor Abbott's latest action aligns with a series of efforts to harness resources for wildfire-affected areas. Fire Management Assistance Grants have been secured for the Rest Area Fire and Crabapple Fire, as well as the Welder Fire and the Duke Fire. As the state faced critical wildfire conditions, proactive steps included the activation of state emergency response resources and an increased readiness level for the Texas State Emergency Operations Center.
Additionally, Abbott has called for collaborative preliminary damage assessments by the SBA and local partners in South Texas. This multi-agency initiative marks another push to understand and address the devastation wrought by recent wildfires on local landscapes and livelihoods. "I thank the Texas Division of Emergency Management for partnering with state and local officials to ensure Texas meet the eligibility requirements for this financial assistance," Governor Abbott conveyed the close coordination among teams striving to aid affected communities. Such unity in response efforts signifies the government's acknowledgment of its role in shepherding communities through crisis and into recovery, according to the Office of the Texas Governor press release.
