On a recent move by the Texas Governor, Greg Abbott has appointed Kenneth Omoruyi and reappointed four other individuals to key positions on the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. The board, which oversees the integrity and competence of certified public accountants (CPAs) in the Lone Star State, will have these professionals serve until January 31, 2031. The appointments await Senate confirmation, as the Governor's Office announced last week.
Grant Coates of Fort Worth, along with Jeannette Pierro Smith, Jill Holup, and James "Jim" Trippon, bring an array of financial expertise back to the board, with Omoruyi joining as a new appointee. As part of their roles, these individuals will uphold the board's mission to ensure that CPAs meet the stringent education, skill, and capability requirements necessary to competently represent the profession of public accountancy, the announcement by the Governor's Office detailed.
Omoruyi, a managing partner at CKO CPAs and Advisors, hails from Bellaire and brings a blend of academic and practical knowledge to the board. He is also an adjunct accounting professor at Lone Star College, and holds positions on several professional committees, including the Texas Society of CPAs - Houston Nominating Committee and AICPA conference committees. In a lighter note, he plays alto saxophone at his church, evidencing a commitment to his community in and outside his professional life.
As the newly named chair, Smith from Mission will lead the Board with her extensive experience, which includes a partnership at Carr, Riggs & Ingram, LLC, and a board membership on the AICPA examiners board. Maintaining an advisory role at UT Rio Grande Valley School of Accountancy, her presence signifies a connection between the Board and Texas' educational infrastructure in a field that demands ongoing learning and upholding of standards.
The repeat appointees boast equally impressive resumes. Holup, operating out of Austin, wields her financial acumen as COO and CFO at CenterGate Capital, and shares her expertise as a board member and treasurer at the Austin Humane Society. Trippon, a Houston-based CPA, authors personal finance books and oversees JM Trippon & Company and Trippon Wealth Management Group. Meanwhile, Coates continues to represent Fort Worth as CEO and president of The Miles Foundation with past service to its associated production company. Collectively, these individuals represent a formidable assembly of financial expertise, vested in the public trust and accountability of their profession.
