Governor Greg Abbott has made the call to reinstate three members to the University of Texas System Board of Regents. These reappointments, featuring Christina Melton Crain, Jodie Lee Jiles, and Kelcy Warren, are slated for terms that will stretch until February 1, 2031. The announcement made on Friday, now awaits the nod of confirmation from the Senate before it becomes official.
Christina Melton Crain, hailing from Dallas, brings a rich legal background and a long history of engagement with both community service and the corrections industry. With a resume that includes terms as both an attorney and founder, president, and CEO of Unlocking Doors, her experience speaks to her qualifications clearly. An alumna of UT Austin, Crain’s academics are in line with the demands of the board – a Bachelor of Arts in Government followed by a Juris Doctor from Oklahoma City University School of Law. Her past service covers a diverse array of civic and professional boards, from the Texas Board of Criminal Justice to the Dallas Women Lawyers Association.
Jodie Lee Jiles's reappointment also carries the weight of substantial experience in leadership and development. Representing Houston, Jiles serves as director of business development for Transwestern. He’s no stranger to academic boards, having been a member of both UT Austin Development Board and the UT Health Development Board. His educational foundation was laid at Texas Southern University and subsequently built upon at UT Austin, where he completed a Master of Professional Accountancy.
Kelcy Warren from Dallas remains another piece of the puzzle, overseeing a vast energy portfolio with his hands at the helm of several major partnerships, including Energy Transfer LP, Sunoco LP, and USA Compression LP. His commitment to education is evident through his support of various programs and charities dedicated to the welfare of children. A product of the UT system himself, Warren's educational credentials include a Bachelor of Science from UT Arlington.
Should they receive Senate confirmation, these individuals will again hold seats at the table where the future of the UT system is regularly debated and decided. As reported by the official Office of the Texas Governor announcement, these appointments reflect Abbott’s confidence in the trio's capability to navigate the complexities of higher education governance and contribute to the sustained success of the University of Texas System.
