Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Education Agency to investigate claims that Bellaire High School educators facilitated a student's social transition without parental consent. The investigation will determine if the incident violated state laws regarding parental rights and child protection, according to the Office of the Texas Governor.
Governor Abbott stated, "Parental rights are not stripped once a child enters a classroom," and "Schools certainly should not promote distorted notions of human biology or push children further into gender dysphoria." Earlier this year, President Trump called efforts by teachers to assist minors with gender transitioning without parental consent a form of child abuse, as reported by the Office of the Texas Governor.
Allegations against Bellaire High School have led to an investigation by the Texas Education Agency into whether educators violated child protection laws, following Governor Abbott’s directive. Texas law requires licensed professionals working with children to report suspected child abuse or face criminal charges. In his State of the State Address, Abbott stated that Texas recognizes only two genders and said educators discussing gender-transitioning with students without parental involvement should be dismissed, as stated by the Office of the Texas Governor.
