
The City of Grand Rapids is once again opening doors for its younger residents through the GRow1000 Summer Youth Employment Program, which promises an enriching job experience for youth aged 15 to 24. As reported by the City of Grand Rapids, this initiative, created in the tumultuous summer of 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, has been a steadfast response to enduring racial and economic disparities, striving to provide equal opportunities.
The 2025 program marks the sixth year of GRow1000's efforts, which have seen the participation of nearly 1,150 youths in diverse job roles spread across businesses, nonprofit organizations, academic institutions and government since its inception, and this year, they are all set to welcome more. Structured as a 6-week, 120-hour paid work expedition beginning June 9th and concluding on July 18th, locals can expect their young participants to engage in real-world work experiences while pocketing a decent $13.00 per hour, now with a fresh slew of enhancements to their tried-and-tested format.
One such enhancement, as highlighted by the city's announcement, is the "GRow Further Fridays," a sequence of weekly training seminars aimed at instilling professional savvy in dressing for success, public speaking, financial management, and more; meanwhile, new introductions this year include streamlined electronic submissions for timesheets and feedback alongside on-site visits from staff of Our Community's Children, ensuring the program's ongoing commitment to mentorship and development.
Interested youths may glean insights into their potential summer jobs and employers during the GRowcase, a Meet-and-Greet event scheduled for April 14 at the City Commission Chambers, affording the youth a transparent view into their upcoming roles, moreover a platform for applicants' questions specifically on their applications or onboarding processes.
