After a grueling year of recovery from injuries sustained in the line of duty, Gresham Firefighter Spencer Tejedas is set to return to his firefighting family, as City of Gresham officials announced. His return, which is slated for Monday, March 31, will see him stepping into a new role at the Gresham Fire Training Center, where he’ll share his hard-earned knowledge with new recruits.
"Spencer’s return is nothing short of extraordinary," Chief Derik Minard expressed his sentiments about Tejedas' comeback, emphasizing his inspiration to the department and the community; everyone is looking forward to seeing him in action once again, this time from an administrative perspective, a transition that speaks to the resilience inherent in those who pledge their lives to serving others and the strength to find a path forward, different though it may be.
Tejedas suffered severe injuries while responding to a duplex fire on May 30, 2024, a day that tested the limits of bravery as the scene careened from bad to worse when, amid the engulfing flames, a brotherhood faced the darkness together and came out fractured. The Gresham Fire Department and Portland Fire and Rescue quickly converged on the scene, but as the situation escalated rapidly, Tejedas was critically hurt, with burns covering over 45% of his body, marking a sharp turn in a storied career of public service.
