A confrontation at an illegal after-hours club in San Antonio escalated into gunfire yesterday morning, resulting in one suspect being shot and taken into custody by the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD). The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the 5000 block of Southwest Military Drive, as SAPD detectives were investigating the venue, as reported by KENS5.
According to SAPD Chief William McManus, detectives were fired upon by a 28-year-old male suspect from inside the club as they arrived on the scene. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the suspect was struck and subsequently barricaded himself within the establishment, refusing to surrender for an unspecified duration before finally exiting and being detained by officers. The wounded suspect was later hospitalized. Chief McManus highlighted, "There were chaotic moments as those officers were caught in the crossfire," but clarified that no officers or bystanders were injured, as noted by KENS5.
Further details provided by KSAT indicated that after the man was shot, he reentered the club and continued to hold his position. It wasn't until the arrival of SWAT and negotiators that the standoff came to an end several hours later. The suspect, whose identity has not been publicly released, was described as stable when taken to the hospital.
The officer involved, having served six and a half years on the force, was unharmed during the incident. In a Facebook video, McManus stated, "We were lucky we didn’t have an officer hit tonight, because somebody from inside was just shooting randomly outside toward the detectives." The encounter has prompted an investigation by both the SAPD Shooting Team and the Internal Affairs Unit, the findings of which will be reviewed independently by the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office, as per a report by KSAT.
This event marks the fourth shooting incident involving SAPD officers in 2025. With the investigations underway, both police actions and the shooter’s motives remain under scrutiny. No additional information about the incident or the suspect's condition has been released to the public at this time.
