The Hickory Police Department is rolling out its March traffic enforcement initiative, P.A.C.T. – Pay Attention in City Traffic, focusing on Falling Creek Road NE and 8th Avenue NE from Hwy 127 to 4th Street Drive NW. According to an announcement from the City of Hickory, the campaign will target common traffic offenses, including distracted driving, speeding, and following too closely, in an effort to increase safety on city streets.
With the rise of accidents related to inattentive driving, officers will be specifically looking to address behaviors that compromise the well-being of all road users. In an effort to aggressively tackle these issues, authorities are calling on the public to maintain a high level of awareness and to stick to the regulations. The emphasis on proper conduct extends to pedestrians as well, who are encouraged to "cross safely; use crosswalks, cross at the corner or other designated crossing areas; obey pedestrian signal indicators; and wear reflective materials when walking at night," as stated in the city's announcement.
Drivers are reminded to remain vigilant for pedestrians, particularly at crosswalks and intersections. The emphasis on attentiveness extends beyond pedestrians to cyclists as well. Bicycles share the road and are subject to the same traffic laws as other vehicles, including riding in the direction of traffic and following all applicable traffic control signals.
The Hickory Police Department is focused on promoting traffic safety to protect all road users. By encouraging motorists to yield to pedestrians and ensuring that both drivers and cyclists follow the rules of the road, the aim is to reduce the risk of accidents.
